The Practice Philosophy
Each project starts with a clear understanding of the client’s objectives, the site and the way the building needs to perform. The design develops from these particular conditions rather than from a predetermined style.
The practice is influenced by the thinking of architects such as Juhani Pallasmaa and Peter Zumthor, particularly their attention to atmosphere and to the way architecture is experienced through all the senses—not only through appearance.
A space is also understood through light and shadow, texture, temperature, sound, scale and movement. These elements influence how a building feels, how it is remembered and how people relate to it over time.
This approach is expressed through simplicity. Spaces are kept clear, materials are used with purpose and details are carefully considered. Simplicity does not mean removing the quality or character of a building. It means removing what is unnecessary so that the architecture becomes more efficient, effective and meaningful.
Function and experience are developed together. A building should be easy to understand and practical to use, while still creating a sense of comfort, presence and belonging.
The aim is to create architecture that feels natural and considered: simple in its expression, efficient in its use and lasting in the experience it offers.
The Design Approach
Architecture shaped by purpose, place and experience.
Understand
The process begins with the client, the brief and the site. The purpose of the building and the priorities of the project must be clearly understood before the design begins.
Simplify
Complex requirements are brought together into a clear architectural response. Unnecessary elements are removed so that the building becomes easier to use, build and maintain.
Experience
Light, shadow, materials, temperature, sound and movement are considered as part of the architecture. These qualities give a space its atmosphere and character.
Coordinate
The architect works with engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors and specialist consultants to bring the different parts of the project together.
Deliver
The project is followed through its development and construction so that its architectural direction is maintained.
